This book, Village Hero 1973, is a new compilation of village success stories published in ¡°From the Beginning of the Saemaul Undong to the Present¡±, a Saemaul White Paper compiled by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 1973. The white paper records the bloody and tearful struggles of the people who overcame 5,000 years of poverty. The Saemaul Undong took the lead in those movements. Villagers of all ages and genders participated in the Saemaul Undong. And there was a village leader who took the lead and set the example. Even though they gave up due to failure and frustration, they got up again like Ottogi(tumbling doll) and eventually did it. They cast off poverty and created a prosperous village. One historian has diagnosed that one of the reasons wars started, world wars started, was because there was nothing to feed the young children when they complained and cried that they were hungry. The Saemaul Undong was a war. It was a war fought against poverty to escape hunger. We won that war.

The success stories that were born in each village in 34,000 villages across the country became the core contents of the country's development. In particular, successful cases in the 1970s became standard models for village development and national development. In addition, these success stories are becoming the sectors of greatest interest in developing countries that want to benchmark Saemaul Undong. This book, "Village Hero 1973", was published in English by translating the 26 successful cases and 16 small stories published in the first Saemaul White Paper published by the government in 1973. I hope it will be helpful to those who aspire to develop their own village.
